A comprehensive box set is set to be released, documenting the acclaimed 1994-1995 concert series by the musical group Ween, which celebrated their seminal recording, Chocolate and Cheese. This extensive collection, titled Boognish Provides, is scheduled for an October 16 launch through Rhino. It features seven complete live performances from that period. During this tour, the core duo of Aaron Freeman (Gene Ween) and Mickey Melchiondo (Dean Ween) expanded their live sound with the addition of drummer Claude Coleman and bassist Andrew Weiss, marking a significant evolution in their on-stage presence.
The 14-CD compilation encompasses a variety of venues across the United States and Europe. Notable recordings include shows from McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California (October 9, 1994), The Metro in Chicago, Illinois (October 30, 1994), First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota (October 31, 1994), The 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia (February 10, 1995), Hof Ter Lo in Antwerp, Belgium (March 27, 1995), Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado (May 20, 1995), and Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (June 16, 1995). Each concert features numerous selections from Chocolate and Cheese, alongside tracks from earlier works and future releases, such as “Flutes of Chi” from White Pepper and “The Blarney Stone” from The Mollusk. A special 24-minute live version of “Vallejo” from the Athens performance has been made available in anticipation of the box set, capturing the raw energy of their metal-infused improvisation.
Sound engineer Kirk Miller vividly recalls the Athens performance, noting the electric atmosphere between the band and the audience, which culminated in a memorable stage dive by Mickey into Claude, concluding with them retreating backstage. Although Ween has been on a break since 2022, their catalog has seen a resurgence of reissues and archival releases. Recent years have brought forth deluxe editions of Chocolate and Cheese and 12 Golden Country Greats, along with a series of digital-only live albums. The upcoming Boognish Provides box set is available for pre-order and will also feature a 2LP vinyl edition highlighting key moments from the various shows.
